Turning 53: How I Set Midlife Health Goals Around How I Want to Feel

In a few weeks, I'll be celebrating my 53rd birthday.

Back in May, around my half birthday, I committed to six months of body recomposition. I'm talking about building muscle, reducing body fat, and improving my overall health...in the middle of perimenopause.

And the results? I'm getting stronger. In fact, I hit a new personal record with my back squats this week. Yay me :)

But what I'm loving even more is how I feel. Less brain fog, deeper sleep, and more energy.

I don't just want to weigh less at 53. I want to feel incredible at 53. And 60. And 70.

What is body recomposition?

Body recomposition means building muscle and losing body fat at the same time. Because you're adding one and losing the other, the scale can barely move while your body is clearly changing. In one 2024 clinical trial, postmenopausal women who trained for 16 weeks gained lean mass and lowered their body fat percentage, with no change in body weight (Healthcare, 2024).

That's one reason I measure this season by more than a number. A squat PR counts. Sleeping through the night counts. Having energy left at the end of the day counts.

Can you build muscle during perimenopause?

Yes. A 2026 review of 126 studies and more than 4,000 women found that resistance training improved strength and body composition in women across the lifespan, and menopausal status made no significant difference in the results (Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2026).

Your body is changing in midlife. It is still responding.

I'm not the only one with a birthday goal

Apparently, I'm not the only one thinking this way.

Three women (all moms) recently booked consultation calls with me because they wanted to get healthier before milestone birthdays.

Two are approaching 40, including one who's planning a birthday photo shoot. LOVE that!

The third is giving herself two years to enter her 50s feeling strong, healthy, and confident.

None of us is trying to turn back the clock. We're thinking about how we want to experience the years ahead.

The Grown Woman Standard behind my birthday goal

Which brings me to the Grown Woman Standard behind all of this:

We choose our goals based on how we want to experience life, not just how we want to look.

A goal that's only about how you look tends to end at the photo. A goal built on how you want to live keeps going after the birthday. That's the difference between wanting to weigh less at 53 and wanting to feel incredible at 53, 60 and 70.

When your identity changes first, the weight loss follows

This idea has been at the core of the Stop. Dieting. Forever.™ method from the beginning. Back in 2022, I recorded a podcast episode on how to change your identity to change your weight, and it still holds.

You don't have to wait until you reach your goal weight to start thinking and acting like the woman you want to become.

Is accepting your body the same as giving up on your health?

No. And I hear this one a lot:

"But Jennifer, I'm at the point where I'm just trying to accept my body as it is. I'm getting older, my body is changing, and I'm tired of trying to lose weight."

I hear you. And you absolutely should love and appreciate the body you have right now.

You don't have to lose 40 pounds to feel beautiful, wear what you want, or enjoy your life.

But let me challenge you.

Are you genuinely at peace with your body, or have you decided that changing it is no longer possible?

Because those are two very different things.

You can embrace aging AND want to feel stronger, leaner, healthier, and more energetic. Accepting your body doesn't mean giving up on your health.

Your next birthday is coming either way

Remember those three women I mentioned? They all had a vision for how they wanted to feel by their next milestone birthday.

But having a goal and making the decision to pursue it are two different things.

Your next birthday is coming whether you take action or not. Imagine arriving with three months of progress behind you instead of another three months of wondering why nothing is working.

If you've tried everything and still don't know what needs to change, that's exactly what we figure out on a consultation call.

You don't need another birthday wish. You need a plan, sis.

Let's make a plan for your next birthday

I got you.
