Tying Your Shoelaces and Losing Weight (same same)
Benita is my first cousin and she's three years older than me.
Our parents were always together so I saw her a lot.
She's kind of like my big sister.
In this photo, that's her tying my shoe laces.
I struggled with tying laces as a kid.
Cross the laces
Pull it from the middle
Make a bunny ear loop
Do it again
Ugh. My brain struggled to follow the instructions while moving my little fingers at the same time.
I was the last person in my kindergarten class to get a star for successfully learning how to tie my shoes.
I remember the entire class watching, waiting for me to finish tying my shoes.
Let's say I was not a fan of tying shoelaces.
Recently, Benita sent me an old photo the of us.
I told her I looked distraught in the photo.
We went back and forth on text imagining the dialog that was happening between a five-year-old and an eight-year-old.
This morning, I was lying in bed, thinking about that photo.
As a kid, we need to listen to other people.
Other people's thoughts about us can keep us safe.
They can keep us from getting hurt.
They can keep us from struggling unnecessarily.
As a kid, we need to listen to other people.
Unfortunately, we take this need into our adult life.
We think we need to listen to other people to keep us safe and from getting hurt.
The traditional school system doesn't teach us how to think for ourselves.
It's no wonder that we fall victim to the diet industry messaging telling us…
…you need to take this fat-burning pill to lose weight
…you need to drink this shake twice a day to lose weight
…you need to portion control your food to lose weight
Our childlike brains are no match for the marketing machine fueled by billions of dollars.
I was a victim of their thoughts too.
I followed all the weight loss rules…
…for decades and they didn't work.
In 2013, I started the journey to learn how to think for myself when it comes to my body.
I stopped listening to what THEY said I needed to do and I started to listen to ME.
Your body will always tell you exactly what it needs…
…you just haven't learned how to listen to it.
Stop. Dieting. Forever. isn't just a cute tagline.
It's an education.
It's where you learn how to stop depending on generic diet rules.
It's where you learn how to THINK and understand what is best for you.
No one knows you better than you.
