Perimenopause Weight Loss: What If Eating Less Isn't the Answer?

I recently completed my GLP-1 Integration Specialist certification through Empowerd Academy. Let me tell you, we're only getting half of the story.

If you believe the relentless GLP-1 commercials, you'd think these medications are the answer to everybody's weight-loss problems. But the more I learn about metabolism, the more I realize how much we're missing when it comes to weight loss, especially for women in perimenopause and menopause.

Not Every Woman Responds to GLP-1 Medications the Same Way

Not every woman responds the same way to GLP-1 medications. I'm seeing this play out with my own clients.

I'm not gatekeeping this information. You need to know this stuff, too.

Perimenopause Weight Loss Involves More Than Calories

Your metabolism is a group chat between your brain, gut, hormones, nervous system, muscles, and cells. During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal changes can throw that group chat into chaos.

Calories still matter. But eating less and moving more doesn't address everything influencing your metabolism.

Take a look at these four areas: appetite and satiety signaling, insulin and glucose signaling, energy and mitochondrial signaling, and nervous system and recovery. Anything sound familiar?

What Connecting the Dots Looks Like With One Client

I started working with a 47-year-old, busy mom of two who gained nearly 20 pounds over eight months and has struggled to lose that weight. Her A1C was at the upper end of the normal range, and her fasting insulin wasn't particularly elevated. Her hormones were stable. She wasn't struggling with hunger or overeating, either.

So why would I automatically focus on appetite suppression?

Instead, we decided to take a closer look at her energy and recovery, including the role of mitochondrial signaling. Mitochondria don't just make energy. They help the cell read the room, sensing demand, nutrient availability, and stress, then signaling accordingly.

That's what connecting the dots looks like.

The Grown Woman Standard

That brings me to the Grown Woman Standard:

I get the support I need instead of trying to figure everything out on my own.
