The System Was Never Built to Help You
You are not behind. You are not lazy. You are not someone who just needs to try harder.
You are someone who has been given an incomplete picture and told to figure it out on your own.
A high school classmate of mine sent me a message recently that I have not been able to stop thinking about. She said she felt overwhelmed at how many things she was supposed to eat and do every day. She had gained 20 pounds with menopause. She was doing everything right. Working out, lifting, doing cardio, intermittent fasting, eating high protein, adding chia seeds and collagen and creatine and vitamin D and magnesium. Every single day. And it still was not working.
I read that and thought: she is not alone. Not even close.
You Are Not Failing. The Picture Is Just Incomplete.
Here is what I want you to understand before you add one more supplement, hire one more trainer, or cut one more thing out of your food.
Dr. Heather Hirsch, a physician who specializes in menopause, put it this way: for decades, perimenopause has been filed under gynecology because periods change and periods stop. Except perimenopause is actually a cardiometabolic transition, not a pelvic one.
Read that again.
The medical system has been routing your symptoms to the wrong conversation for decades. And that routing has consequences. Your gynecologist looked at your hormones in isolation. Your nutritionist looked at your food in isolation. Your trainer looked at your movement in isolation. And you were left standing in the middle of all of it, holding every piece separately, wondering why nothing was connecting.
That is not a personal failure. That is a structural one.
What My Own Journey Taught Me
I went through this myself. It started quietly. A slow burn of symptoms I kept tolerating because I did not fully understand they were related. Then the weight piled on in ways I did not recognize, and nothing I was doing touched it. The muscles I had spent years building seemed to disappear overnight. The sleep was disrupted. The mood swings were real.
I went to my gynecologist. He told me to do a better job reducing my stress and go on vacation more. I went to my primary care physician, a Black woman close to my own age. She looked at my labs and told me everything looked fine. I left both appointments with nothing.
It was my best friend, honestly, who pointed me in the right direction because she had seen someone on Facebook who she thought did something with hormones. That is how I found my way to functional medicine and to hormone replacement therapy. That is how I started actually connecting my own dots.
And I remember thinking: this is not how it should work. No woman should need a lucky Facebook post to find real support.
The Belief Worth Questioning
If you are doing more and getting less, the instinct is usually to do even more. More restrictions. More workouts. More research. More supplements.
But here is what I have come to understand: more is not the answer when the strategy itself is incomplete. When your doctor, your nutritionist, and your trainer are each holding one piece of your picture and none of them are in the same room together, adding more pieces does not fix the gap. It just adds to the overwhelm.
The goal was never to accumulate more tactics. The goal was to finally understand your body as a whole system.
What You Actually Need
Not more. Not harder. Not a stricter version of something that is already not working.
You need your pieces in the same room. You need someone to look at what your body is actually doing, across your hormones, your metabolism, your lifestyle, your stress load, and show you how those things are talking to each other. In your body. At this stage of your life.
That is the conversation that changes things. Not the supplement. Not the eating window. The full picture.
You Are Not Behind
My classmate is not behind. You are not behind. You were handed an incomplete map and told to navigate without one.
The overwhelm you feel is not a character flaw. It is the completely predictable result of trying to do everything right inside a system that was never designed to show you how everything connects.
You do not need to do more. You need to finally see the whole picture.
